An existing in-ground, concrete storage bunker was a predominant structure (besides the house…and its rooofline) to factor into the design of this award-winning project. The top of he bunker became an excellent patio space. The curve of the bunker’s outer wall offered an aesthetically pleasing option for tiering a staircase from the upper patio, deck and porch areas of this home northwest of Des Moines. We considered a complimentary curve to the upper deck and porch areas but that roof was tricky enough as it was. Curves take the edge off, like a fine glass of wine and this staircase exemplifies this perspective of our approach to the fine art of outdoor design.
